The Story Behind the Art
This image is a reproduction of “Lake Michigan Bluff Garden” painting. It is an oil painting on canvas. I just love how deep and luminous the oil paint is. Acrylic paints have come a long way over the years and you can get really good color with them but to get a really good deep definition, I still prefer oil if I have a lot of time to work with it. The scene it depicts is of a girlfriend’s backyard garden that sits on a bluff over looking Lake Michigan from her home on Michigan Avenue in Charlevoix. It is a beautiful street full of large, prestigious homes that go way back and are passed down for generations.
Years ago my girlfriend had purchased the house with her husband and was telling me of the garden she planned for the back yard. She asked if I could paint it so she could visualize the garden better. So, I painted the backyard garden that wasn’t there… yet! I added the picket fence which she loved. She used the painting as a blueprint for the garden. I love doing things like that! It turned out wonderfully.
Fun Facts
- My father in law, Dale Boss, was a door to door milk man on Michigan Avenue in Charlevoix, Michigan back in the 1950’s.
- The owner of RG Gun Cigars lived on Michigan Avenue and I was very good friends with his wife.
- I have drawn or painted by commission almost every home on Michigan Avenue.
